Why Raine Group have reduced bids to two – and why we’re not surprised

The biggest piece of news over the Chelsea sale in recent weeks was the elimination of the Ricketts family bid from the equation.

That took the field of 4 preferred bidders down to 3 – and we’re now hearing that may have been filed down to just 2 now.

The Mail on Sunday have an exclusive which claims that Steve Pagliuca’s bid for the club will be eliminated this week, as it is “not offering anything new.”

It always seemed like the weakest of the 3 remaining groups, and it has been playing catch up to the early front-runners of the Todd Boehly group. Many people were surprised it was actually added to the shortlist at all, so the news it won’t be in the final two won’t be that surprising.

This just increases the chance of the Boehly bid being chosen – but now it’s down to just two, you can’t rule out a surprise win for Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium, which continues to add backers and famous faces even at this late stage.
