Chelsea could cancel final year of defender’s contract to allow free move

It was reported last week that Cesar Azpilicueta had made enough appearances this season to trigger an automatic one year extension to his contract.

That means his free transfer to Barcelona, which has been in the works for some time, now can’t happen. We had speculated that Chelsea would actually let him go just for a nominal fee, as a reward for a decade of loyal service, but according to The Sun today, they will go even further than that.

The red top reports that the club are willing to cancel his remaining year entirely and let him go on a free after all.

It will leave them with a big hole at the back, considering Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are also being poached, but it would indeed be cruel to stand in Azpi’s way if this is what he really wants.

It’s also an incentive for Barca to act in a proper way when it comes to trying to lure Rudiger and Christensen.
