Chelsea able to renew three key contracts – in theory

The fact that all four of the groups still in the race to buy Chelsea have American links means that CBS Sports‘ Ben Jacobs has been all over the process, and his lengthy article today is the perfect way to get up to speed with where we stand after a quiet couple of weeks.

The most interesting detail from a footballing point of view is to do with the players. As we understood it, Chelsea weren’t able to agree any new deals under the terms of the government license which is allowing the club to operate despite the sanctions.

Jacobs denies this, claiming that all of the deals could be agreed in principle – it remains just a matter of persuading the players to agree to them.

According to him this is because the offers were made before the sanctions were applied. In the case of Cesar Azpilicueta, it seems that because Chelsea have a unilateral clause in his deal to add an extra year, that won’t be an issue.
