Chelsea’s first star at risk of missing World Cup after close defeat

Senegal are at risk of a major return to reality after their Africa Cup of Nations win, after a loss to Egypt in their World Cup playoff first leg.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was instrumental in helping his country win the continental competition in January, but could do nothing to stop Mo Salah giving Egypt a precious 1-0 lead.

There’s plenty of talent in that Senegal side, and plenty of opportunity for them to overcome the Pharaohs in the second leg, but they will need Edu in top form, that’s without doubt.

Mendy’s save of Salah’s shot was almost enough to keep it 0-0, but the save hit the bar and then a defender before crossing the line.

As it stands, Mendy will be one of the few Chelsea players having a bit of time off in the middle of next season, while everyone else is in Qatar playing at the World Cup.
