In the end they signed nobody and recalled Kenedy, who was always the fall back option. They spent weeks trying to recall Emerson Palmieri from his loan with Lyon, but due to them having an option to buy him this summer, they rejected various offers of compensation from Chelsea to bring him back.

There were a few other potential targets linked with Chelsea as being options to come in, and one of those was Stuttgart full back, Borna Sosa.
