“Wants a new challenge” – Chelsea insider explains Rudiger, Azpilicueta, and Christensen contract situations

With Thiago Silva having signed his new contract extension with Chelsea recently, The Blues now just have three remaining defenders to try and tie up to avoid losing them on as free agents come the summer.

Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Andreas Christensen all have contracts that run out at the end of June 2022 unless Chelsea can convince them to sign new deals.

These situations have all been very up and down and have been changing on a weekly basis. It was thought that Rudiger would almost certainly be out the door, but that doesn’t look so clear now.

In fact, it’s more positive, according to Chelsea insider Nathan Gissing, who is part of Gianluca Di Marzio’s staff.

He was speaking on The Si & Dan Talk Chelsea Podcast this week and revealed what he knows on all three of our current contract situations, with Rudiger now being the most positive.

“Azpilicueta wants 2 years plus the option of another so he’s likely to leave unless he accepts the 1-year on offer,” Gissing said.

“I’m told Christensen wants a new challenge. I think Rudiger will stay, he wants to stay.”
