Rising star Ian Maatsen reveals what Thomas Tuchel said to him in the summer

There was a lot of talk regarding the potential of Chelsea bringing Ian Maatsen back from his loan with Coventry City this transfer window as cover for Ben Chilwell.

Obviously Chilwell is now out for the rest of this season, and Maatsen is a rising star who plays in his position.

It now looks highly unlikely that Chelsea will try and recall him from his loan, and that’s probably very wise for his own development, due to having such a good season out on loan in his first season in senior football.

The 19-year old Dutch youth international has revealed that he did speak to Thomas Tuchel in the summer about his future long and short term, and it was the head coach who advised him to go out on loan and play football, as reported on the Chelsea website.

It’s already proven to be the best decision with his development coming along nicely.

Maatsen said:

“He [Thomas Tuchel] just said you are young; you must go and play as many minutes as you can and when the time is there you will be ready for the Premier League or the next step in your career.

“I follow Chelsea all the time. Every single player is so good. They are in a good position, they play well, and I can learn from them outside of football as well.”
