“It’s not about ten players serving one player” – Thomas Tuchel rejects idea that Chelsea must change for Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has had a very slow start to life back in West London, following a huge money move this summer.

Injuries and Covid have hampered his integration, and an ill advised interview brought the team headlines they didn’t need. On Saturday against Manchester City we saw another game where he really struggled to get involved at all, and it was put to Thomas Tuchel today in his press conference that the team might have to change their style to get the best out of their number 9.

Tuchel rejected the idea on principle. He said that’s just not how football words. “It’s not about ten players serving one player,” in quotes picked up by Football.London.

He regularly points to the attacking unit as a whole, refusing to blame Lukaku individually but also not absolving him of blame by saying it’s a systematic issue. He’s clearly frustrated with answering questions about the forward’s form – a couple of goals tomorrow night against Brighton would work wonders, but it also seems likely that there will be serious rotation of the attacking players.
