“Encouraging talks” between Chelsea and Antonio Rudiger

The interminable saga of Chelsea’s free transfers continues, you’ll be happy to hear.

At times it’s looked 100% certain that Antonio Rudiger will leave the club for nothing this summer, and the defender has done little to comfort fans on that front, always saying nice things about the club but never saying he’s staying.

But there are now “encouraging talks” between the club and the defender, according to the latest update from the switched on and plugged in Matt Law at the Daily Telegraph.

This may be because Real Madrid – who seemed favourites to sign the centre back for a long time – seem to have moved on to other plans, meaning Rudiger now may not have a better option on the table than staying put at Chelsea.

Law’s takes on the Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta sagas aren’t quite as positive – but at this stage, one out of three feels like a decent return.

  1. With all due respect for the frighteningly energetic German, our defense is custom made for him. A Real fan once labeled Antonio a “system player” and it rings true. In the past, when we were playing a back four he was closer to being a liability than a star defender. Whichever team nabs him : better play him in a back five.
He’s still a great player and a great leader; he’ll be missed if he goes; but irreplaceable? Nope, that he ain’t.
