Mateo Kovacic tests positive for coronavirus after one day back in training

Yesterday the news was good for Mateo Kovacic – he had returned to training after missing 8 games.

Now, after all that, after one solitary day back in training, he’s gone and tested positive for Coronavirus, ruling him out until he can test negative.

Thomas Tuchel just confirmed the bad news in his press conference ahead of the game against Zenit tomorrow. As you’d expect, the coach was sad, and also just disappointed for his player.

We didn’t expect Kova to be match fit for some time, so it’s not as devastating as it could be, but it will still delay his much-needed return to the team. The back luck goes on for Kova this season – and all after he had started it so brightly. He was the best player in the team in the first couple of months of the season, and had linked up nicely with Romelu Lukaku, who has just returned from his own injury issues.
