Yesterday was the Ballon d’Or ceremony, meaning tonight is the night everyone lays into the winners and the organisation for picking them.
Leading the assault was Patrice Evra, who couldn’t believe that Gianluigi Donnarumma won the best goalkeeper award, and also ranked higher than Chelsea stopper Edouard Mendy in the final shortlist of 30.
“Also the goalkeeper – I know he win it, Donnarumma,” Evra said in quotes on his Instagram page.
“But what about Mendy? – You know – African Cup… We are the monkeys. No one respects this competition.
“We are the only competitions where you have to leave your club for three weeks and play that cup because Africa – we always have that little space.”
He certainly isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and many people would agree with him – although it seems likely playing the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter is the decision of the competing countries, and FIFA might actually prefer to have it in the summer.
