Chelsea have an exceptionally deep squad at the moment, but with players in their 30s in every part of the pitch, they’re always looking to the future.
Their recent raids on the Bundesliga produced Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, and now it sounds like the Blues are ready to return for another talent.
CaughtOffside carry the claims that Chelsea are chasing Florian Wirtz, Havertz’ successor at Bayer Leverkusen. They say he will cost £85m, and given what we paid for Havertz, we can well believe it.
The 18 year old has a contract until 2026, and the Germans have all the power as it stands. We can imagine they will let him continue to develop and keep raising his price – but ultimately, without the Champions League to offer him, they know they will have to let him go eventually.
That might line up perfectly for Chelsea, with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho both likely into their final few seasons in West London, given their age.
