Chelsea ready to pay €50m release clause for breakout wonderkid of the season

Barcelona midfielder Gavi has been one of the breakthrough talents of the season, going from nowhere to a regular starter in Catalonia, and then stepping up to play some exceptional games for the national team too in recent months.

So rapid has his rise been that there’s not been time get him signed up to a major new contract, and his current deal still has a temptingly low €50m release clause.

Catalan paper Sport today write that Chelsea are willing to pay it – as would several other teams, we imagine.

As brilliant as it would be to sign one of the world’s biggest talents for that kind of money, it seems a long shot. The kid has just broken through at his boyhood club, he’s playing for his country, and things couldn’t be going better in his career.

It seems unlikely he would throw that all away to make a risky move to the Premier League, probably to sit on the bench, no matter what money Chelsea offer.

As it stands, we just expect this juicy release clause to force Barca’s hand into a major new offer to their wonderkid, sooner rather than later, with a massive new release clause.

But until that deal is agreed, we’ve always got a chance…
