Chelsea come 6th in Premier League record signings ranking

It’s the international break, so websites all round the world are dreaming up fun ways to pass the time without club football.

ESPN have done a fun piece which ranks every Premier League club by their record signing, comparing their price with their accomplishments.

Chelsea’s record move was actually this summer, as Romelu Lukaku came in for £98m.

So far he’s got 4 goals and an assist in his 11 starts, and ESPN reckon makes him the 6th best record signing in Premier League history.

Now don’t get us wrong, that’s a decent scoring record, and we’re sure there’s a lot more to come from Romelu after he’s back from injury. But 6th place for a player who cost a fortune, and has since had as many bad games as good – and then got injured – seems generous.

Looking at the players below him, however, it really just shows that most “record signings” don’t work out – it’s hard to live up to that price tag wherever you are, whether you’re heading to Norwich for €10m, or to Chelsea for close to €100m.
