One of the less likely transfer stories of the season is rumbling on rather than fading away as we’d expected.
Chelsea have been linked with Attila Szalai, the Fenerbahce defender, for a few weeks, with some surprising reports coming from Turkey that a deal was actually close.
Now Football Insider are reporting that the Blues have “opened talks” to sign the defender as soon as this January in an exclusive today.
That’s where it slightly falls down for us. Yes Chelsea have a very uncertain situation around a lot of their central defenders, but their priority is surely still to extend Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. It would be basically admitting defeat on that front to spend money on a new player in that same position.
And that’s to say nothing of the emergence of Trevoh Chalobah, who has been brilliant at centre back this season, and is now a real option.
