Romelu Lukaku leaves Belgium training camp early – but not because of injury

Romelu Lukaku has left Belgium’s international training camp today, as confirmed by the national FA.

Chelsea fans may have just had their hearts stop – but it’s nothing to do with an injury. Instead, with Belgium facing a third place Nations League playoff,  they’ve decided to rest some of their big stars.

Lukaku scored against France in the semi final and looked good, but as he faded in the game the opposition grew, and Belgium ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat.

Now they have the embarrassment of a losers’ playoff against Italy, and clearly Roberto Martinez thinks it’s more important to keep relations good with club managers for the future. Lukaku will come back to England, get a few days off, rejoin training next week – and hopefully be in perfect shape for next weekend’s game against Brentford.

This will be an important week at Cobham for him, as we look to get Lukaku and the whole team playing at a better standard.
