“Rapid” – How Romelu Lukaku’s transfer went down after years in the making

Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea now feels inevitable, but it’s easy to forget it looked closer to impossible not long ago.

With Inter Milan roaring to the Serie A title and Chelsea struggling, it would have been difficult to imagine the striker making the change.

But the fire sale at Inter at Chelsea’s resurgence opened up a path, and according to a story on the transfer on Football.London, it didn’t take long to sort out the finer details.

“There was a lot of chatter. The transfer itself was pretty rapid,” explained Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello.

“When they decided to go for it, they went in hard. It didn’t last particularly long.”

That’s how we often hear Chelsea’s transfer operations described. While we often despair at the outcomes, there’s no denying the efficiency of the process.

You can dispute their choice of player sometimes, but once they know what they want, they don’t hang around when it comes to getting the deal done. We saw it plenty of times last year, as the club completed multiple moves in quick succession. Lukaku is the latest example of that, but he won’t be the last.
