Kai Havertz on how Thomas Tuchel is able to improve him as a player

One of the reasons Thomas Tuchel was chosen as the latest Chelsea manager was that we needed to get the best out of our signings from the previous summer – chiefly our record signing Kai Havertz.

The theory wasn’t just based on the fact that both are German. Tuchel is known for his man management, and his ability to improve individual players. The combination of that with Havertz’ raw skillset was too tempting to ignore.

Now, approaching a year on, we’ve see Tuchel get a lot more out of the attacker than Frank Lampard managed. But there are still major holes in his game, and in an interesting interview on the Chelsea website, the Germany star explained how Tuchel was coaxing the best out of him:

“[Tuchel] always expects a lot of good things from you when you play in the starting XI, also when you come on, so you always have to show yourself and also the coach what you can do, that you are ready to play. I like this because I am young, I have a lot to learn. I know that. I am still 22 and I have so many years ahead of me. Sometimes I also want to know when I do something not good. So it’s good for me to have a coach that helps me out in these situations and also who always wants to improve me. That’s very nice for me.”

It’s great to see Havertz go into such detail on how Tuchel is working with him, playing on his quiet and shy personality to gradually draw out more of his exceptional talent.

Given the improvements last year, we can’t wait to see what Havertz is looking like by May this year.
