“He’ll come into his own” – Joe Cole says Chelsea star will step up with strikers hurt

Chelsea are in a tricky situation in the next few weeks.

Their priority was getting new striker Romelu Lukaku to gel with his teammates in Thomas Tuchel’s 343.

Now, suddenly, he’s out injured, along with second choice forward Timo Werner. On the evidence of the way Chelsea played after they both left the Malmo game last night, it will be Kai Havertz up front for the foreseeable future.

We saw plenty of that last season, and former Blue Joe Cole thinks it could be the making of the former Bayer Leverkusen player as he continues to try to find form:

“A lot of his time in Germany he played as a false nine. I find he’s more comfortable in that position because he’s got that ability where he can play with his head on a swivel. I think you’ll actually find in the next few weeks he’ll come into his own,” Football.London and the Chelsea Chronicle quoted the former winger as saying.

It’s a shame it’s taken injuries for Havertz to get a consistent run in the team, but hopefully he can find his stride, and keep it up even when his teammates are back and fit.

The pressure is on him, but as we saw with his crisp finish last night, he loves a bit of pressure. He’s got a phenomenal amount of first team appearances for a player of his age, and shouldn’t be fazed by anything.
