Chelsea midfielder down to his last chances already

There are certain players we’re almost certain to see when Chelsea take on Southampton in the EFL Cup tomorrow night.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Marcos Alonso, for example, are all peripheral first team players who will get their chance.

But there’s one man who might not, despite not having played a minute for some time now. Saul should be in line for a game, but if Thomas Tuchel goes with a midfield of Ross Barkley alongside Loftus-Cheek and either Mateo Kovacic or Jorginho, the Spaniard might find himself on the bench once again.

That truly would be a death knell for his chances at Chelsea. If you can’t get into an EFL Cup team in a game wedged between international breaks, you’ve got no chance of playing again, barring serious injury issues.

We don’t want to write him off because he’s a quality player, but if we don’t see him tomorrow, it will be tricky to bounce back.
