“We want to be on the front foot” – Chelsea defender says his team are not defensive

Chelsea are not a defensive team, according to a player positioned at the heart of the backline.

Andreas Christensen was speaking to the Chelsea website after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on the weekend.

This game however, Chelsea were penned back for the majority of the game and really struggled to play out from the back due to Manchester City’s intensive high press and hunting in packs to retrieve the ball back.

This isn’t a normal look for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea though and they certainly cannot be described as a defensive team. This was just one of those games to write off, and Christensen wants Chelsea to immediately get back to being a team that plays on the front foot and attacking.

The Danish international has been in fantastic form of late, and although he defended his heart out against City at the weekend, as he explains here, Chelsea are not a defensive team.

“It [Juventus] will be a tough game but it’s a great opportunity to get back to playing football the way we want to play, the way we see ourselves, playing on the front foot again,” said Christensen.

“It’s a tough game but there’s no better way to recover from a defeat than to beat another good team.

“I don’t think we see ourselves as a defensive team,” he added.

“We’ve shown in other games we can play with a back five or a back three with quality. We want to be on the front foot.

“It was always going to be a tough game [vs Man City]. We feel like we gave the first half away a little bit and we got into the game too late. It felt like we lacked a bit of everything, especially in the first half.

“As soon as we got on the ball in the first half, we had no options really. We lacked a bit of intensity, energy going forward, a bit of composure on the ball. We lacked what we usually have on the ball, so it was a bit of everything and it’s disappointing but we’re looking forward.”
