Thomas Tuchel claims that Timo Werner is playing with “more confidence” despite bad misses

Thomas Tuchel has his press conference ahead of the game with Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup this weekend, but as usual the manager ended up speaking more about Premier League action than the League Cup.

One topic high on the agenda was Timo Werner. The German forward has lost his regular starting spot with the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, and when he came on at the weekend he fluffed a couple of easy chances – as he tends to do quite regularly.

Despite that, he got into dangerous positions, stretched the defence, and got an assist in the end too.

Tuchel insisted that he was seeing good signs from his countryman, as you can read in quotes picked up by Football.London.:

“It shows also how Romelu is, he knows how a striker feels that lacks goals. For me, Timo was in dangerous positions and wasn’t too far out, in and around the box. He had the assist which was well done, this is important. How he trains, not only in quality but the attitude. He is more free in his movement and with more confidence. Sometimes it needs time.”

To be honest, we’ve been hearing about Werner needing more time for over a year now, and we’re starting to doubt whether he will ever get confident enough to finish every chance.

But ultimately, he’s a threat on the pitch regardless, and will be a useful member of this squad for the rest of this season at least.
