“This season is where I hit the ground running” – Loftus-Cheek defiant and ready for comeback

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been one very unlucky player.

Just as he was really hitting some fine form and establishing himself as an important and regular player for both Chelsea and England back in 2018/19, he hit a real stumbling block with a major achilles injury.

He then had to build muscle around the injury and it took him a long time to regain that strength and power that his game was known for.

He also lost a lot of confidence and has been struggling on loan moves for the last two seasons. This has done him good though as he slowly built up muscle, confidence and fitness ready for his big comeback this season.

It does look likely that he will stay in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, although nothing is set in stone yet. But if he does, he sounds more than ready, physically and mentally, and we love to hear it!

Loftus-Cheek told the Chelsea website:

“I had last season as a season where I can find my feet and it definitely felt like that at the start. I was struggling mentally and needed to focus on just taking risks in training and get that feel back. But it eventually came and I was doing really well in games, so I’ve had my injury and I’ve had a season now to get fit and feel confident in my body and this season is where I hit the ground running.

“I feel really fit now and strong, and hopefully the injuries stay away. Last season was my first full injury-free season which is a massive positive for me, because I always used to get niggles. Even though I was fit I’d be out for a week or a couple of days, miss a couple of matches, but last season was good for my body to be fit every training session and available for every game.”
