N’Golo Kante wins Champions League midfielder award

N’Golo Kante has just been confirmed as the winner of UEFA’s Champions League midfielder of the season award. As you might expect, he accepted it with a shy smile.

It goes against the rumours in recent days from Italy, which claimed that Jorginho, the other Chelsea nominee up for the award, was going to win it.

Kevin de Bruyne was the other shortlisted player to miss out – understandably given he lost the final.

Kante is a worthy winner – he was exceptional in every knockout round including the final, and there was arguably no better performer at any position in the whole competition.

We couldn’t have won the thing without him – and we’re delighted to see yet more individual recognition for the humble France star.

It’s just a shame that Ruben Dias beat Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger to the defender award – we were so close to a clean sweep after Edu Mendy won the goalkeeper award.
