Chelsea fans knew about Mason Mount from when he was a star in the youth teams. And fans of other teams who were really paying attention will have noted his impressive first season in senior football on loan at Vitesse Arnhem.
But for lots of football fans, it was his return to English football with a move to Derby County that really saw him emerge as a name.
For the players at Derby, that was certainly the case. FourFourTwo have a really great interview with Jody Morris about their time together at the club, and he reveals the reaction to Mount’s first day in training.
“So we added Mason to the Derby squad and, again, after the first training session, about four or five of the players came up to us in the canteen afterwards and went, ‘Oh my God’. He made a few of the Derby players stand up and think that we hadn’t just signed a kid from Chelsea with a reputation, we’ve just signed someone who can really do big things for us,” Morris explained.
It’s a great story, and one we’re sure has been the case plenty of times in Mason’s career. He’s making a habit of proving his doubters wrong, and by the end of this Euros, we might end up finding that there are no doubters left at all.
