Timo Werner really is quite a fascinating character.
He’s sort of had a terrible season, and is getting a Torres-like reputation for misses, but on the other hand has more goals and assists combined that anyone else in the team.
He also speaks very openly and with disarming honesty about his form, as in this exclusive interview with Matt Law in the Telegraph today.
The Germany striker was able to identify exactly where things went wrong for him after a bright start to his Chelsea career:
“I had these two or three games after the international break where I missed a lot of chances and that was in my head, and after this my confidence was gone,” Werner explained.
“It was like a period where in my head I was going crazy because I missed those chances.”
It lead to a run of 14 games without a goal, and containing a few face-palm inducing misses. But the good news is that the forward is now convinced that he’s through his patch of bad form, and that the goal he scored against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi final (albeit a header into an open goal from 3 yards) will be the turning point for his self belief.
Let’s hope so – there’s a pretty big test of that theory coming up this Saturday night.
