Azpi and Jorginho desperate to give Timo Werner confidence he needs to see off Real Madrid

Timo Werner has struggled to score goals this season, but he’s proved so integral to the way that Thomas Tuchel wants to play that it’s hard to see him not starting against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The worst possible outcome is him starting and then missing crucial chances, so it’s important to get him as confident as possible.

Adam Newson of Football.London noticed what his captain and vice-captain were up to at the weekend, as the German got an assist against Fulham.

Both players had been rested with the Madrid game in mind, but were there on the side-lines encouraging Werner whenever he did something positive.

“Good Timo!” Azpi was heard to shout several times from the bench as the German forward threatened Fulham with his pace and runs in behind.

It’s only a little thing, but it shows that the players are feeling the nerves as acutely as we are. The image of our misfiring forward spooning one over the bar in the last minute is just too awful to bear.
