There are a million excuses for tonight’s Chelsea result, but despite all the genuine madness, there are some football aspects to consider too.
Thomas Tuchel changed up the team after an important win over Man City, but his moves didn’t pay off, and the side looked disjointed and sluggish throughout against Brighton as they laboured to a 0-0 draw.
Mason Mount was used in a midfield 2 but didn’t look at his best, while Tammy Abraham failed to get a minute on the pitch once again, even as the team struggled desperately to score.
Fans weren’t happy with some of those calls and some of the structural changes. Tuchel “overcomplicated the tactic” moaned one Blues fans on social media, and there were a few who had similar feelings.
On a day like today it’s hard to be too focused on a bad result though, and TT has plenty of credit in the bank already.
You can see a selection of the reaction in the posts embedded here:
Tuchel over complicated the tactics today. But I’ll give the players benefit of doubt with all the ESL bullshit that’s happened.

Tuchel is at fault for that one.

#CFC draw 0-0. Team looked shattered mentally and physically. Not surprised. Brighton played like a side with something to prove and benefitting from having a week off.

If you're going to put in a good number of crosses, it might make sense to play a CF who goes in for them. For all Havertz's gifts, that ain't him. pic.twitter.com/Ti4e3oQ9dD

Bad from the players. Double bad from Tuchel.

Tuchel is fielding the worst line ups I've ever seen

Tuchel needs to stop doing the Pep Guardiola kind of over sabi at times
Over rotation of the sqaud isn't healthy for this team— Praiz✌️(LBS) (@FunomPraiz) April 20, 2021
I blame no one but Tuchel for this…. I blame him!

A day to remember for Chelsea…
A game to forget…

Lucky to get a point after this performance. Rubbish.

Flat game, I’m sure what has happened off the pitch has affected the players.
Big games from now until the end of the season, we have to win these types of games.

❌ Chelsea produced 7 shots against Brighton, their lowest in a PL game under Thomas Tuchel. They had averaged 16 shots per PL game under Tuchel before tonight #CHEBHA pic.twitter.com/s019B6jGVU

There's really no argument that says it's fine to play Emerson as an auxiliary winger and to play Reece on the left and Cal/Pulisic at wing-back but leave Tammy out entirely for some 60 days now. Nobody's demanding he starts every game, but as a member of the squad, use him.

If nothing else, every single senior outfielder in the first team squad has had some playing time since Tammy last did on Feb 20th (and 2/3 goalkeepers). Injuries did for some of that absence but when you frame it like that, it really looks questionable.
