It appears Chelsea are out of the European Super League, and they’re bringing the whole stinking edifice down with them.
The house of cards was always reliant on total unity and strength to survive, and removing a cornerstone like Chelsea so early on would always bring it crashing down.
The Blues are pulling out, clearly due to the venomous reaction from fans, and the opposite reaction to their withdrawal has been just as positive.
Across social media, Chelsea fans – with a heavy tone of irony – are celebrating the fact they’ve “saved football” this time, having been accused of ruining it for so many years.
OK, it’s not as good as refusing to join, but being the first to admit your mistake is worth some credit – or at least worth a smaller share of the opprobrium than everyone else.
Right?
You can see a selection of the reaction embedded here:
Understand #CFC decided the #SuperLeague had just become too toxic and was damaging the club's reputation. They signed contracts described as binding in order to join it. Now in process of trying to rip them up. Shambles #CHEBHA

A few Chelsea fans have made some of the biggest institutions in world sport crumble in a few minutes. Don’t EVER tell me that the supporters aren’t the most important factors in football.

Despite the executive casualties at the other Super League clubs, I’m told any suggestion Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck will resign is “nonsense” #CFC

Can we just be clear here…
Us fans are absolutely incredible and WE are the reason for what’s happened this evening.
Not this football club, the board should hang their heads in shame for what’s happened.
WE took football back. Not them.

But the image of the night for me, is seeing Petr Cech out there talking to the fans, we are so lucky to have him

After the events of the last few days #chelsea fans can do two good deeds to support those who support their club. First become or renew membership of @ChelseaSTrust . Second buy a share in #CPO Chelsea Pitch Owners @pitchowners

The people at the club that agreed to this, need to take a serious look at themselves. I’m in a very good mood but this can’t be ignored. You let us down. Don’t forget our love for this club just because we haven’t been allowed in the stadium together for over a year! 💙👊🏼

It’s JP Morgan I feel most sorry for

JP Morgan, Woodward, Agnelli, Abramovich, Perez…you tried it. You came for our game and you lost. Now hang your heads in shame. It’s our ball and you can’t play. https://t.co/fxlh7M7Xtc
