Jorginho picked out as Chelsea’s man of the match in surprising stats choice

It’s always interesting to check WhoScored after a Chelsea game to see who was given the man of the match award. The TV broadcaster will almost always given it to a goalscorer, while the mysterious stats algorithms of WhoScored sometimes throw up more interesting choices.

Last night was a perfect example – Jamie Carragher gave the award to Andreas Christensen, with apologies to Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante.

But WhoScored went with Jorginho, who didn’t get much of a mention on the coverage. Drilling down into the stats, one can see why.

The Brazilian born playmaker made 5 tackles, more than Kante. He had an 87% pass completion rate, he picked out Timo Werner with a superb pass that lead to the disallowed goal.

He can be very frustrating at times, but when he’s playing in a system he likes he’s great, and Thomas Tuchel’s game plan is suiting him down to the ground.
