When a former Chelsea player invokes the memory of Peter Osgood, one of the club’s legends, you know things are serious.
This time it was Alan Hudson, speaking about the draw with Manchester United at the weekend, who was bringing up the ruthless goal scorer.
“I didn’t think either side deserved to win, if only for their lack of creation,” Hudson told CaughtOffside after the bore draw at Stamford Bridge.
“I did a podcast on Peter Osgood on that morning and after an hour thought of him going nuts at the lack of service.”
It’s certainly true that there was a lack of attacking quality from both teams. After a few bright opening exchanges both settled into their trenches and played out a draw, with little intent on either side.
The Chelsea attackers in the game – Olivier Giroud up top in particular – were indeed starved of the ball largely, and even the “King of Stamford Bridge” Osgood would have found it very difficult to score with so little creation coming from deeper in the team.
