Chelsea goalkeeper “needs to” improve in this area claims Rio Ferdinand

Chelsea have just drawn 0-0 with Leeds, and they had their goalkeeper to thank for ensuring they got a point from the match at all.

Edouard Mendy made some great saves, with two stunning stops in particular keeping Leeds at bay.

Despite his great performance, Mendy had a couple of hairy moments with the ball at his feet – something that has become a rather regular occurrence.

The Metro picked up Rio Ferdinand’s quotes from BT Sport, where he praised the keeper overall but noted that he would have to get better in possession:

“I think he’s got a real commanding presence. With his feet I think he’ll improve, he needs to. But everything else in terms of a goalkeeper the most important thing is saving the ball, I think he’s very sound.”

It’s hard to disagree, and while Mendy hasn’t cost us too heavily yet with shaky touches or bad passes, it’s certainly the weak point in his otherwise solid game.

It will be interesting to see whether the club believe in his development long term, or whether they invest again in goal this summer. Certainly Mendy’s done well enough to earn their trust – but we all know how ruthless they can be.
