Frank Lampard had used Timo Werner both wide on the left and up front – and couldn’t quite make it work with the summer signing in either spot.
Under Thomas Tuchel, the forward is in a different role again, according to him. Speaking after the game today, he said he’d played as a “left 10” behind Olivier Giroud.
We know what he means – a kind of inside forward. It suited him too, he looked dangerous darting around between the lines and set up both goals as the Blues won 2-1.
You can see the striker speaking in the clip from Sky Sports embedded here:
🗣”Now I play a left 10 and not a left winger, so very good for me. A good move from the manager."
