Mason Mount is Chelsea’s creative core despite lack of assists

Last week, some cruel “Chelsea fan” on Twitter made an account which tracks Mason Mount’s stats. It had been noted that the midfielder didn’t have an assist from open play for almost a year, and that was being used as a stick to beat him with.

Of course assists only become assists once the player on the end of them has put the ball into the net, so maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that Mount doesn’t have one this season given our striking issues.

There are also other factors – just look at our win against Atletico on Tuesday. Mount didn’t get the assist for Olivier Giroud’s goal, as it came off a defender, but if the midfielder hadn’t been there swinging his own boot at it, Mario Hermoso never would have panicked and flipped it over his own head to Giroud.

He’ll get there though – just look at the Expected Assists column on FBRef this season. Mount has an incredible 5.2, far ahead of anyone else in the team.

He just needs his attacking players to find their groove a little, and he’ll be racking up the numbers he deserves.
