Kepa says there was “no problem” with Lampard and he was never close to Real Madrid move

Kepa is speaking on Spanish radio show Tiempo de Juego right now, and he was of course asked about the exit of manager Frank Lampard last month.

The Spaniard fell out of favour under Lampard through last season, and saw Edouard Mendy signed to replace him in the summer. Despite all that, he insisted that “with Lampard there was no problem,” and that he had “not planned to leave Chelsea.”

“I was not close to Real Madrid,” he added, referencing rumours of a return to La Liga.

Kepa was given a clean slate by Thomas Tuchel – that meant a start in the FA Cup last week, followed by a surprise Premier League start on Monday. So we can imagine he now sees a little light at the end of the tunnel.

But can he honestly say he’s never planned to leave? The arrival of Mendy in the summer was surely a sign his time is almost up. We admire his bravery, but there’s only so many chances he will get.
