“What about him?” – Harry Reknapp told Frank Lampard to sign City regular

Harry Redknapp is famous for the players he signed, but also for the stories he tells about players he almost signed.

This time he’s got a story about a player that he recommended someone sign, although nothing eventually happened. Talk about tenuous.

He was speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday broadcaster yesterday, and his quotes were picked up by The Metro after Man City rolled to another victory and seemingly secured themselves the title with another clean sheet from an imperious defence.

“[City] are fantastic aren’t they and John Stones… what a comeback.

“I text Frank [Lampard] at the start of the year but they’d already made a signing at Chelsea. I said, “What about him, John Stones?” ‘I think he’s a real talent. Someone just had to get hold of him again and get him playing and believing in himself.”

Stones does look good now, but only in the context of a superbly coached Pep Guardiola team, playing with Ruben Dias alongside him. We dread to think how bad the former Everton defender might have looked in a Chelsea team struggling for confidence, with a manager change midway through the season and a selection of less than reliable partners at the back.

Maybe it’s a good thing, both for us and Stones, that Harry’s suggested move never happened.
