Frank Lampard suggested attempting to sign Jan Oblak

Matt Law’s big article in the Telegraph today is all about Kepa Arrizabalaga and the goalkeeper situation at the club.

It goes into some detail on what happened last summer. After a year of playing Kepa and gradually losing faith in him, culminating in the Spaniard being dropped for the conclusion of the season, Frank Lampard apparently suggested signing Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.

This would have been a serious deal to pull off, with huge fees and wages, and it’s not clear whether this suggestion was before or after Kai Havertz was signed. Either way, it was clearly considered out of reach for the club, who went for the bargain basement Edu Mendy instead, for a snip at £20m.

He’s done far better than Kepa so far, but it’s a low bar, and some fans remain convinced a top tier replacement will be required. Oblak is a wonderful dream, but the financial realities may mean he remains just that.
