Thomas Tuchel has praise and a warning for Chelsea youngster

One of the big fears about the departure of Frank Lampard and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel has been that the young players who have made such good progress will be left behind.

In all honesty we can’t see Reece James or Mason Mount losing their places in the team – they’re just too good and too important. Tammy Abraham was already in a battle with Olivier Giroud week in-week out, and we don’t expect that to change.

Billy Gilmour – who was only just breaking into the first team under Lampard – will have more of a challenge. He was left out of the squad entirely, despite excelling in the game against Luton at the weekend.

Tuchel specifically spoke about him in his first proper press conference today in quotes recorded by Liam Twomey of the Athletic, and the new manager complimented Gilmour’s “game understanding” and “strategic” qualities.

But there was a warning in there too – that the young Scot may need to up his game physically if he wants to crack Tuchel’s XI.
