“Must surely play Gilmour” – Former Blue disappointed by Lampard’s conservative selection

Alan Hudson spoke to Caughtoffside earlier this week about the team he wanted to see Frank Lampard put out for today’s game against Fulham, and now we know the starting XI, we can see that the former player will be disappointed.

He was calling for Billy Gilmour to start in midfield after an impressive showing against Morecambe in the FA Cup, but Frank Lampard has played it safe and gone with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in the absence of N’Golo Kante.

“As for the Fulham match Frank must surely play Gilmour and Kante and allow Pulisic the freedom to get forward, a little like Villa have done with Jack Grealish, organise your midfield and have your ‘ace’ in the pack to create chances for those forwards who at first looked so very dangerous but have dropped away, form wise,” Hudson pleaded earlier this week.

There is a frustrating element to it – we all know Billy’s talent, and we’re all pretty keen to see him out there. But you can’t blame Frank. He knows his job is on the line during this run of games, and he’s understandably reverted to a safe selection in midfield in the end.
