Kai Havertz’ former boss says he doesn’t see the idea Lampard has for player that ‘must play’

Everyone is having their say on the Kai Havertz saga right now, including his former Bayer Leverkusen manager, Peter Bosz.

The German international is yet to really start firing on all cylinders as of yet, and Frank Lampard has taken him out of recent starting line ups to protect him and ease him back in gently, a lot like he did with Christian Pulisic last season.

This is not wise, according to Bosz who was speaking to The Athletic, as cited by Caught Offside today.

“It’s really good that he protects him in the press, though,” said Bosz.

“But in the end, you must deliver, you must score goals and make goals. For a €100 million transfer you must play, and he isn’t.”

It’s kind of a contradicting statement this. Havertz wasn’t performing, so Lampard took him out of the lime light to protect him, which I think was wise.

However, the next statement about playing Havertz in a position that will benefit him the most and get the best out of him, I do agree with.

“I can see why Chelsea brought him in but I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him,” said Bosz.

Lampard has used him in a few different positions, but I think we need to focus on one position for him now, and this must be in an advanced role, not one where he finds himself sitting deep defending too often.
