Frank Lampard promises “many, many minutes” for Callum Hudson-Odoi after oddly dropping him

One of the big surprises (there was many) to Frank Lampard’s starting line up against Fulham yesterday was Callum Hudson-Odoi dropping to the bench.

The 20-year old winger has easily been Chelsea’s best creative spark over the last handful of matches, but he is still not managing to sustain a regular run in the starting line up, which is odd.

Lampard has often promoted playing players on merit, which is why Hudson-Odoi deserved to start yesterday. Ironically, when he did finally come on late in the second half, Chelsea looked a different team and the he played a part in the goal that finally broke the deadlock and got Chelsea the all important three points.

It is far from easy for Lampard, with two other quality players getting in ahead of Hudson-Odoi in the shape of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech. But if you are picking players based on form, then the England international starts over either of the other two right now, it really is that simple.

Lampard was questioned on this after the game, as reported by WAGNH.

He said:

“It was difficult [to leave out] Callum because there has been a real uplift in his form. That’s a sign of his development, he is coming on, going by people, and showing confidence. And a lot of that will be down to the injury he had to get over last season. […] I am delighted with how he is playing at the minute and he is approaching it in the right way. He will get many, many minutes for us.”
