Frank Lampard is in place for his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game with Leicester, but considering it’s January, there were questions about transfer too.
It looks like outgoing moves will be more prominent than incoming, and first in the out tray is Fikayo Tomori.
Football.London recorded the manager’s answer when asked about the defender’s future:
“Fikayo is a developing player. We can’t play all our centre backs in one game. This year we have 5, the predicament is difficult. He wants to play regularly and that’s why he may go out on loan. He has made big strides in the last two or three seasons. There is no detail on those reports [of a permanent buyout clause].”
The move being rumoured is a loan to AC Milan, and Lampard all but admitted that it will happen – although you’ll note that he stopped short of confirming that the rumoured purchase clause is indeed part of the deal.
It will be a shame to see him go, but as the manager says, we have too many defenders in the squad at the moment, and there’s not enough playing time to go around.
Hopefully this move can end up benefitting Chelsea, Fikayo and Milan in the long term.
