Billy Gilmour’s perfect opportunity to break into first choice midfield at last

Chelsea have made 7 changes to the team that lost to Leicester on Tuesday, but that hasn’t meant a slew of youngsters brought into the side.

In fact, such is the depth at Frank Lampard’s disposal this season that he still fields a very strong second string.

One notable young player brought into the mix is Billy Gilmour, brought into the team to try and impress where Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic failed so miserably against the Foxes.

Gilmour will play as the deepest midfielder of three, and has a super chance here to audition for a role in the team long term. The struggles of his competition mean the way is open for the Scot if he excels today, and Lampard will surely be open to using him in the league if he impresses.

We’ve understood the reluctance so far, given the youngster’s lack of experience and the serious injury he’s just recovered from. But if he shines today, he will surely be in the mix for a starting role for the rest of the season.
