We kept telling ourselves not to expect too much from Billy Gilmour tonight. It’s his first start since July, he’s been out for ages, it’s a heavily changed team and he will need time to find his feet.
We needn’t have worried.
He’s picked up just where he left off – with an utterly brilliant first half against Krasnodar. Given there’s not much else to enjoy in this game other than the kids playing, it’s perhaps not surprising that there’s been mad love for young Billy on Twitter.
The “absolute baller” has had his “sauce” complimented in various quarters, and everyone was on the same page – he’s some player already, and he’s just getting started.
We can’t wait to see what he produces in the rest of this game, let alone in the rest of his career at Chelsea.
You can see some of the reaction embedded in the Tweets here:
Billy Gilmour is still learning, still developing but the teenager does not look in the least bit fazed. Playing on the half-turn, head up, always positive, pretty quick, good touch, confident. Lampard's faith in him understandable. #cfc

Gilmour is a little genius. He plays with the awareness and knowledge of someone twice his age and experience

Billy Gilmour is a generational talent but you lot aren’t ready for that conversation. pic.twitter.com/qHJqqGQRSr

Nice combative play by Gilmour to keep possession to lead to that foul.

Gilmour is beginning to apply some sauce to this game #CFC

Where the bloody hell are we going to fit Gilmour in? Because he’s a starter.

I don't think any of us needed reminding, but Billy Gilmour is a fantastic football player.
