Olivier Giroud explains Mason Mount’s superb recent run

Olivier Giroud won the game for Chelsea last night with a towering header in the 91st minute, but even he had to give it up for Mason Mount who had run the show until his second half withdrawal.

After the game the France striker was happy to answer all kinds of questions about his impact on the game, but he also wanted to talk about Mount – perhaps because he was standing just offscreen in the interview.

The Chelsea official website recorded his quotes about his in-form midfield teammate:

“He’s in a very good run,” Giroud admitted, and it would be hard for anyone who saw Mount’s super assist for the opening goal to deny that.

“He’s settled well now in this midfield three, he’s enjoying himself and improving every single day.”

“I’m happy for him because again he was decisive with his assist for Callum. We are all happy to have this guy in the team and in the dressing room.”

The idea that he’s improving every day must be pretty scary for some other midfielders in the league. His all round game is getting better and better, and he’s already shown he can play as a central midfielder in a deeper role rather than just an attacking one.

With players like Giroud up front to get on the end of his long passes and crosses, his assist last night will be the first of many in the Champions League.
