Mason Mount was outstanding again for Chelsea as they beat Newcastle easily at St James’ Park on Saturday.
It’s a fixture that’s given the Blues trouble in recent years, and asked what had changed since last year’s defeat in the North East, Mount had a two part answer:
“The way we’re playing playing at the moment, we can come to these places and feel confident in getting the result, whereas last season maybe we didn’t have that confidence,” he mused in quotes on the Chelsea official website.
“You look back at some of those results where we dropped points and conceded easy goals but it feels like this season there’s been a bit of a change in that and in our mentality,” he went on.
So improved confidence and a better mentality. That’s a solid way for any team to see a jump in performances.
Of course we’ve added serious quality in the transfer market too. But players like Mount were here last year, they’re just operating on a new level in the last couple of months. As much as we’d love to put it all down to just Kai Havertz and Timo Werner balling out, the reality is that it’s been a combination of everything coming together at the right time to elevate us to a new level.
