Lampard hints that this one first team player will miss out in the Champions League

The fun just doesn’t stop.

Fresh from our win over Newcastle at the weekend, Chelsea head off to France next to face Rennes in the Champions League.

It’s an important game too, as a win there will all but seal the group for us.

Understandably then, manager Frank Lampard is looking to play the strongest team available to him, and in a piece on the club’s official website he explained that even Kai Havertz was in with a chance of playing.

But embedded in those comments was also a hint that one of his first XI might not make it.

“I’ll make a decision whether to make changes or not depending on how the recovery looks. We have people like Ben Chilwell who has had a back problem, and players who played a lot of international minutes.”

Mason Mount and Timo Werner are surely the most likely to miss out on the basis of minutes played for their countries, but its Chilwell who is surely most at risk after being name-checked.

We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Emerson Palmieri feature in his place in France, and the team should be able to cope with that change.
