Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic now locked in for season-long battle – Opinion

Jorginho started Chelsea’s midweek game against Rennes last week, only to be replaced by Mateo Kovacic at the weekend against Sheffield United.

The Italy international has had the edge between the pair so far this season, starting 5 games to Kovacic’s 3.

With Frank Lampard now seemingly to be keen to use a 433, featuring Mason Mount and Kai Havertz flanking N’Golo Kante, neither Kovacic nor Jorginho can expect to be first choice. They’re both competing for the first reserve slot, to fill in whenever one of those initial three isn’t available.

The fact that both were used last week shows they will both have plenty more opportunities to come. They have different skillsets, and both seemingly have the trust of their manager.

But with Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek gone and an exceptionally busy season ahead, they will both get their chances to shine, and one may well force their way back into Lampard’s first team plans.
