Gareth Southgate references Mason Mount memes and sets off another debate

Mason Mount has a terrible reputation as a teacher’s pet at club level, because of the way Frank Lampard managed him at Derby and then brought him back from loan to Chelsea.

That reputation has now moved across to England duty, where Gareth Southgate is consistently mocked for picking the hard-working and dutiful fresh faced academy boy ahead of cool big-calved maverick Jack Grealish of Aston Villa.

It’s a ridiculous argument to begin with, and we won’t get into the faulty logic of the people who think the two are interchangable.

Southgate even referenced the “memes” that have been going around, mostly featuring him romancing Mount in various film settings.

Meanwhile on Twitter, the debate raged back and forth about whether Mount was a deserving Golden Boy, or whether he was getting preferential treatment at England now as well as Chelsea.
