Chelsea lose possession battle for the first time in 7 games

Chelsea ended last night’s game away in Rennes with a 2-1 win, but they lose the possession battle 51 to 49%, according to stats on FBRef.

There’s no shame in that, especially considering it was an away game in the Champions League, but it’s interesting to note that that was the first time they’ve had less possession than their opposition for 7 games.

The previous occasion was also in the Champions League, at home against Seville, in a dull game with few chances either way.

Last night the Blues just didn’t play well – no crime, they’re on an amazing unbeaten run and you can’t win every match 4-0. The midfield just looked flimsy and easily broken through – perhaps unsurprising given it was a Jovacic midfield in place.

Without N’Golo Kante – who came on later to great effect, we were unable to match a really impressive and physical French team in the middle of the pitch.

It’s further proof, if any was needed, that Jorginho and Kovacic are a real issue for this team, especially in games where the opposition are going to match us physically.

  1. Jorginho is the main problem, just like last season. looses the ball too often, is too soft and slow. The way he plays affects the whole team.
